Bridge Housing Hope Center Berkeley Way

Hope Center is a landmark supportive-housing and homelessness-services project in downtown Berkeley, developed as part of BRIDGE Housing’s Berkeley Way Apartments. Completed in 2022, the project transformed a former city parking lot into a six-story, service-rich community designed to address homelessness through a continuum of shelter, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and onsite services.

One Workplace worked closely with architect Leddy Maytum Stacey to supply furnishings throughout the project, from lounge areas and dining spaces, to apartment furniture and contents down to kitchen utensils, to create a welcoming, dignified environment for the residents, reducing feelings of marginalization.
The Hope Center provides 53 permanent supportive-housing apartments, 32 emergency shelter beds, and 12 transitional beds for veterans, along with a commercial kitchen, community meal program, supportive services, administrative space, and resources addressing mental health, substance use, employment, and other barriers to housing stability.
LMS's design brings daylight, gardens, community spaces, and a strong connection to the surrounding downtown neighborhood into a building serving people at some of their most vulnerable moments, and the furniture selection amplifies that intention.
This project was conceived as more than a homeless shelter, it was designed as an integrated continuum of housing and support, helping people move from homelessness toward greater stability and permanent housing. We were honored to support the transformation.
