SFSU West Grove Commons | One Workplace

SFSU West Grove Commons

A place where students feel at home day one

A furniture program built around community, for the first project built under California's Affordable Student Housing grant.

When San Francisco State University set out to build West Grove Commons, the goal went beyond adding more beds. The project, a new six-story, 120,000-square-foot residence hall with more than 700 beds, plus a 50,000-square-foot dining commons, two floor student health and well-being center, and so much more. The housing is designed around a "pod" concept: tight-knit communities of roughly 35 first-year students, each grouped around a shared lounge. The furniture needed to support that same sense of intimacy and belonging, at the aggressive pace of a 24-month design-build schedule.

Our Learning Environments team worked closely with project designer EHDD and led the furniture program across the entire project, delivering fully integrated solutions from programming through installation in sync with contractor McCarthy Building Companies.

Furnishing a Sense of Community

The project's housing pod concept groups triple rooms with a dedicated lounge, all-gender bathrooms, and a resident advisor, giving first-year SFSU students an intimate home base to socialize, study, settle in and unwind.

Furniture in each shared lounge was selected to feel less like a college dorm and more like your home living room, supporting the natural community groups the design is built around.

Moving at the Speed of Design-Build

With student occupancy targeted within 24 months of project award, the furniture program moved in lockstep with an accelerated design-build schedule, across the residence hall's community lounges to the dining commons and the new student health and well-being center.

Massive windows, light filled rooms, a nature informed color palette, access to outdoor spaces and flexible, comfortable furniture work to empower students with energy, agency and healthy places to live and learn.
