SFUSD Mission Bay Hub | One Workplace

SFUSD Mission Bay Hub

An 11,000 SF hands-on health and life sciences hub for San Francisco public high school students, was designed by WRNS Studio on the top floor of the new Mission Bay School, amidst UCSF and Kaiser campuses. The Hub is built to serve more than 280 SFUSD high school students each year, plus 500 more through summer and after-school programs to support a local, diverse talent pipeline into health and life sciences.

The space runs in two directions. Students go out into Mission Bay for fellowships and field experience, and industry professionals come in to teach, mentor, and collaborate. The Hub design and furniture solutions treat that exchange as part of the curriculum.
WRNS Studio designed the Hub to work like the places students are preparing to enter. The floor includes: a life sciences lab with professional-grade furniture and equipment for student-led research. A patient care simulation space for hands-on clinical practice. A design and engineering studio with adaptable seating and tables for prototyping and making.
Flexible collaboration zones throughout the floor offer opportunities that shift between group projects, individual focus, and partner visits with professional, comfortable furniture settings, and views into the future.
The impact for SF high school students, time spent here makes the careers real. Freedom Siyam, Mission Bay Hub's Supervisor, said it plainly: "These students start to see real options. During their classwork and studies here, they learn they can do it."
One Workplace was an ideal fit for helping us realize our vision for an environment that both supports deeper learning and creates a welcoming and humanizing experience for our students, staff, and community. OWP brought expertise regarding what this kind of environment could look like while creating a process centered on our voices. Significantly, they responded to our need to center the voices of our students and our staff, creating opportunities for them to weigh in on concepts and even try out samples! We are thrilled with the end result. Erik Rice | Erik Rice Consulting
